Fifth grade students look forward to Mallo Camp at the beginning of the school year. Mallo Camp is 2 1/2 days and nights of fun activities that teach about the environment. It is located in the Black Hills near Newcastle, WY. Morning campfires are a favorite. Students get to drink hot chocolate before eating breakfast. Daily stations teach about the environment and the geological history of the area. The stations include forestry, limnology, animal signs, entomology, botany, geology and meteorology. A journal is written in after the completion of each class and used for student assessment. Evening events include singing by the campfire, square dancing, putting on skits, eating snacks, and enjoying the beautiful, star-filled skies in the Black Hills. Students and teachers sleep in rustic cabins after a fun-filled day. Fifth grade at Lakeview Elementary School is an awesome experience.
