The sixth graders at Lakeview Elementary work hard all year at preparing themselves for their move to junior high. We understand that the need to be organized and responsible are key components to our success in the years to come. A daily planner is used to keep our assignments recorded and to keep track of what is expected on each assignment, such as the due date.
The curriculum for Social Studies covers such topics as the Constitution, the Civil War, the Gold Rush, World War I and World War II. The causes of these events and their effects on our country are researched and discussed. One of our favorite activities is to re-enact the Underground Railroad. We travel through the building searching for "friend" and trying to avoid "foes." A few are fortunate enough to reach "freedom" while the rest are captured and returned to their "masters."
Science is a hands-on class filled with many experiments and activities. We learn how to conduct an investigation and how to use a microscope. We have different units such as geology, energy and meteorology. Two of the best things about this class are the dissection of owl pellets and sheep eyeballs.
Decimals, fractions, measurement, and problem solving are just some of the skills that are taught during our math class. We understand that knowing math is extremely important and that there is not a job around that doesn't use the skills that we learn in math. We work daily to improve our math minds and prepare us for the more advanced math to come.
Our love of reading has fully come alive in the sixth grade. Together we enjoy numerous novels and have also started choosing to read on our own. We work on making connections to our daily lives, other sources of media, and to the world. We have a lot of fun when we have book talks where we share books that we have read on our own with the rest of our class.
