Diarrhea may have many different causes. If accompanied by fever or vomiting, there is special concern for dehydration.
Signs of Dehydration:
1. Amount and frequency of vomiting
2. Dry, cracked lips
3. Elevated temperature
4. Poor skin elasticity. When pinch up, skin does not return to normal quickly.
Observation:
Note the frequency and consistency of stools. Watch for any blood in the stool. Dehydration can occur rapidly in children. Decreased urine output with a strong urine odor, poor elasticity of the skin, cracked dry lips all may be signs of dehydration.
Treatment:
Clear liquids for 24 hours with a gradual increase to solid foods. Avoid milk products until diarrhea is under control. Gatorade is ok to use. Pedialyte is also available in stores. High sugar content shoud be avoided. Several over-the-counter medicines are available. Follow age/dosage guidelines. GOOD HANDWASHING!!!
Call doctor if blood in stool, signs of dehydration, fever, and diarrhea is uncontrolled with medication.
