Eye Infection

Conjunctivitis or eye infection can be caused by bacterial, viral or fungal infections. Symptoms usually consist of redness of the conjunctiva or inner eyelids and drainage. Occasionally the whites of the eyes are red. eyelids may be stuck together in the morning. Itching may occur. EYE INFECTION IS HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS!!! Children may not attend school until they have seen a health care provider and are following treatment as recommended.

Observation:

Watch for signs of worsening. Eyes should dramatically improve with 24 hours.

Treatment:

Call doctor for diagnosis and medication. Over-the-counter medication will not work. Finish the full course of medicine as ordered by the doctor even if the child no longer has symptoms. encourage the child to keep hands away from eyes. Good handwashing should be emphasized. Infected child should use a separate towel.

Call doctor if medication is not working.
