Vomiting

Vomiting may have many different causes. If accompanied by fever or diarrhea there is special concern for dehydration.

Signs of Dehydration:

1. Amount and frequency of vomiting

2. Dry, cracked lips

3. Elevated temperature

4. Poor skin elasticity. When pinch up, skin does not return to normal quickly.

Observation:

Check temperature frequently. Note frequency and amount of vomitus.

Treatment:

No food for one hour after vomiting, then clear liquids such as broth, flat pop, etc. Children may need food with high calories such as regular pop, koolaid and jello. Brush teeth and rise mouth frequently.

GOOD HANDWASHING!!!

Call doctor if child vomits continuously for 24 hours, blood is noted in vomitus, or has signs of dehydration (decreased urine output with a strong odor, poor skin elasticity, cracked dry lips).
