Little Powder School celebrates grand opening
Wednesday marked a new era for the Little Powder School community, as students and staff, community members and state and local officials all gathered for a ribbon cutting and open house at the new K-8 school.
While the celebration brought excitement and anticipation, it was also bittersweet for some. In the weeks leading up to the move, teachers and staff devoted countless hours to sorting through decades of classroom materials and memories, ensuring a smooth transition for students while honoring the legacy of the old school.
During the ceremony, Larry Steiger, the school board’s vice-chair, highlighted the school’s importance to the Little Powder community.
“A school in a rural community is more than a school. It is a gathering place. It is a place of pride. It’s a signal that the community is alive, growing and investing in the next generation. The light is on and the future has a home right here,” he said.
Students also shared their excitement about the new building. Fifth-grader Timber and sixth-grader Ryder spoke about the anticipation that built as plans took shape.
Students imagined, sketched, and dreamed up their “perfect” school.
“Soon we watched construction workers slowly turn an empty space into something amazing,” Timber said.
The workers built a beautiful school and also something else the kids couldn’t wait to use – a brand new playground with “not one, but 𝙏𝙒𝙊 slides,” Ryder said, emphatically.
With doors now open and classrooms filled, the school and playground are entrusted to good hands. The district thanks everyone who played a role in bringing this project to life. Here’s to all of the past, present and future Roadrunners.
