Students test their literary prowess in annual Book Battle

The annual Book Battle last week had gears turning and engines running as students raced to answer questions tied to this year’s Indian Paintbrush Award winners and nominees.

Students in grades 4–6 from across CCSD gathered in Twin Spruce Junior High’s gym last Tuesday evening to test their knowledge. The competition began with more accessible questions before ramping up in difficulty, challenging competitors to think quickly and recall details under pressure.

Favorites varied from team to team, with many students choosing books they felt a personal connection to. One student was captivated by the imaginative world of Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell, while another connected deeply with Many Points of Me by Caroline Gerter, relating to the main character’s experience of losing a parent.

While some answers were clear-cut, there were moments of debate. On the Meadowlark-Pronghorn team, a couple of students were confident that their answer of “gold coins” was correct. When the official answer was revealed to be “memories,” they remained unconvinced.

“Something seems fishy about that,” they remarked, before quickly refocusing on the next question.

Fishy or not, students demonstrated an impressive depth of understanding and enthusiasm for this year’s books. Thank you to the staff members who helped prepare participants, everyone involved in Tuesday's event, and to the students who rose to the challenge! Happy reading
